5 Summer Events in San Diego

There is always something fun and exciting happening in San Diego, so there shouldn’t be a dull day in your schedule this Summer! Amongst your beach days and restaurant hopping, try to fit in these annual events. Some of the events are great for the whole family, while others are a good opportunity for a date night or girls day out!

1. San Diego County Fair

Roller coasters, carnival games, live music and fried food- what more could you want? The San Diego County Fair should definitely be on your calendar at least once, if not every weekend for the month of June! Tickets are $18 for visitors 13+, $11 for visitors 6-16 and free entry for kids below the age of five! You can spend a whole day at this fair and still not see everything! There’s rollercoasters and rides for kids of all ages. The fair also has a Summer Concert Series that features big names like Toby Keith, Darius Rucker and Dan + Shay. No need to pack snacks for the fair when there’s an endless amount of decadent cuisines and treats! Throughout the month long fair there’s also festivals and events to book your visit around like the Wine Festival on June 10th and the Beer Festival on June 16-18.

2. Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-off

Save room in your stomach for this delicious event that takes place on Saturday, June 24th. The annual Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off is a fun, day-long event for the whole family. Get there early before the event starts at 10 am because parking will be tricky. Throughout the fair there’s a variety of food/drink vendors, artists, bands/live entertainment, and of course, the competitors in the chili cook-off! The fair is free to the public and lasts until 8 pm. Last year the fair had over 70,000 attendees! Participate in the fun and decide which chili you think should win!

3. Sun and Sea Festival

Get ready to get sandy! The Sun and Sea Festival, on July 14-15, at Imperial Beach is a great event to bring your younger children to! While all ages will enjoy the beautiful masterpieces created, the younger kids typically love to play in the sand and awe at the competitors. On Friday July 14th the festival will kick off with the Mayor’s beach pier swim and paddle followed by the Mayor’s breakfast at Pier Plaza. Starting at noon exhibition sandcastles will be on display, then at 6 pm the Sandcastle Ball begins! Saturday, July 15th, is an even more jam-packed day full of exciting activities! The morning kicks off with a pancake breakfast open to the public, followed by a parade. From 8 am- 2 pm the master san sculptors will have 6 hours to design and build their creations. Then, from 2-4 pm the sandcastles will be judged. Throughout the day there is also a kid’s zone and a sandcastle building competition for kids!

4. San Diego Spirits Festival

Leave the kids at home and come out for the festival that’s all about “craft cocktails, culinary and culture!” The San Diego Spirits Festival is a great afternoon date with your spouse, or a fun event to attend with a group of friends. Taking place at the Port Pavilion Broadway Pier on August 26-27, the event is definitely one to order an uber for! A Saturday entry ticket is $65 and will gain you access to unlimited cocktail, food and wine tastings from 2-6 pm. Tickets for Sunday are $55 as the festival only goes from 2-5 pm on that day. There’s also a fashion show on Saturday night featuring designers from all over San Diego. Tickets for the fashion show are an additional $15.

5. Del Mar Races

Pull out your fancy hats and your wallets, the Del Mar races are in town starting Wednesday, July 19th! These horse races are some of the biggest in California and nothing is more fun than making a day out of it with a group of friends! With endless supplies of food, alcohol and betting opportunities you’ll be leaving the races hopefully a winner! On opening day there is a Hats Contest for the ladies, and each Sunday there is a Taste of the Turf Club event to showcase some of San Diego’s most famous chefs!
